Lord, I will trust in You.: Harry Potter vs Gods word

iwilltrustinyou:

Well, considering this topic has continued to come up time and time again, and I have been given countless opportunities time and time again to read fellow brothers and sisters ‘opinions’ on the matter; I have realised I am forever finding myself surprised, somewhat shocked and completely…

Magic in the Harry Potter books is nothing more than a vehicle for the story- one which is bursting with Christian themes such as friendship, doing your best to reach the goal, and standing up for what is right even when it isn’t easy or popular to do so. Using the presence of magic to denounce a series is shallowminded, especially when Christian authors have done much the same to great success. C.S. Lewis, one of the greatest Christian Apologetics who ever lived, used magic in his novel ‘That Hideous Strength’. Should we now refuse to read any of his literature ever again? Of course not.

How many other really popular tv shows, movies or books series can claim to be as family friendly as Harry Potter? There’s no bad language. No gratuitous violence. No sex. And all of it is able to be used in a Christian family discussion to help children understand deeper Christian truths. Why does Harry need Hermione and Ron? Why can’t he just fight Voldemort on his own? Even Dumbledore made mistakes and didn’t know what to do something, but you know what? God won’t even make mistakes.

Rather than write off a series which is well-written and full of biblical themes, take Jesus’ example and use the stories and icons of modern culture to explain and display Jesus to the people around you.
